How philanthropy is helping to build communities defined by belonging and pluralism.
In 2023-24, the TogetherUp Institute partnered with the Council on Foundations, New Pluralists and Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) to research philanthropy’s growing involvement in work to connect and collaborate across differences.

The first of three reports, Coming Together, Not Apart: How Philanthropy Supports Connection in a Time of Dangerous Division, draws on original survey data and nearly 40 interviews with front-line organization leaders to explore how philanthropy is investing in this work. It dives deep into how philanthropy is talking about and investing in work to navigate divides and connect across differences, and it examines the opportunities, risks, and challenges involved in funding work to bring people together in a time of toxic division.
The second of the three reports, Coming Together, Not Apart: Inside the Work of Turning Conflict Into Collaboration, spotlights five real-world initiatives to describe their work and impact. The projects vary in size, scope, and methods, but they share the same goal that drives all the work in this field: an inclusive democracy where everyone belongs.
